Definition of love
I want to make you my wife
with all intention to leave you.
I'll worship you all of my life
and lustfully deceive you.
Of course, I acknowledge that you're free
in demanding that your entirely mine,
Never being dependent on me
although my possession for all time.
Respecting your own identity
I want to mould you like clay.
Accepting what you'd like to be
you ought to change the way I say.
I want you being proud and strong
though obedient even if you're right,
challenging me when I'm wrong
you should give in without a fight.

Definition of Love |
As a song, I thought the music should be rebellious and challenge the convention of love, so a rock ballad seemed fitting. |

Definition of Love |
My second song still explored the notions of the paradox and contradiction of being in love, but in a more forceful way, so it is set to a hard rock. Does that change the emotion of the poem? It certainly is very masculine, but also seems to imply that all the positive notions of freedom and respect are just lip service, in the end the male singer just wants his partner to give in. Paradox, maybe, but also quite gender typical. |

Definition der Liebe |
To play even more on the male gender stereotype of the paradox and contradiction of the original English poem, I translated it into German, my native language, and not only that, I tried to give it an even more brutal tinge - and music-wise I tried Industrial Metal - and this was the version I liked best from my experimentation with the genre. |

Definition of Love |
This is now quite a pivot from the first three songs, not only regarding the genre, but also having a woman sing to another woman that she wants to make her her wife, eg. partner, the gender dimension falls away and now the English version of the poem gets a different feel. Not challenging, but playful. Not focussing on gender power play, but on the contradictions of love. |
